artspace Associate

Classification: Part-time; hourly; 33 – 35 hours per week

Rate: $15 per hour (time and half when hours exceed 40 hours per week)

Preferred Degree: College Bachelor of Arts or Business Degree with Arts emphasis

Experience: 2 + years Arts Gallery, Arts Center, or Retail experience preferred

Required Skills: Excellent customer service skills, excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, data management, math skills, highly developed organizational skills, a knowledge of the Arts and Artists, and excellent attention to detail required.

artspace is a program of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) located at 708 Texas Street as an Arts Center, known as THE Destination for Arts, Food, and Fun. The Mission of artspace is to nurture, create, produce and present ALL of the ARTS in a manner that is accessible to ALL of the citizens and visitors to Northwest Louisiana. artspace is THE Destination for Arts, Food, and Fun, and as the Artistic Director, William (Bill Joyce) exclaims, “artspace is a Miraculous Place Where Anything Can Happen.”

Essential Responsibility: The artspace Associate interacts with guests and must have excellent communication and organizational skills with a zeal for event management and fervent interest in learning and sharing about the exhibitions and events in artspace. The artspace Associate will oversee guest services, help with giftspace/artworks/merch sales, rental information, and educational services while maintaining a welcoming, vivacious, clean and professional environment for this dynamic downtown Arts Center. The artspace Associate works collaboratively as the organizing arm of a Shreveport Regional Arts Council team that includes the Artistic Director – William Joyce, Executive Director – Josh Porter, Preparator – Ash Andrews, Events Manager – Exzavia Mitchell, and Catering/Culinary Team (PT Catering and Parish Taceaux Restaurant).

HOURS: artspace is open Tuesday – Saturday. The “regular” working hours are as follows:

Tuesday – Friday: 10:45 am – 5:15 pm; 30-minute lunch break

Saturdays: 11:45 am – 6:15 pm; 30-min break

Thursdays – About once per month, there is a Thursday event that runs until 8:00 pm.

Events/Rentals – The Associate will be given “first right” to work additional events produced by Shreveport Regional Arts Council or via a rental of artspace or the Central ARTSTATION.

Responsibilities:

The artspace Associate oversees the “Front of House” daily operations to ensure a positive guest experience and serves as the Assistant to the Executive Director. Specific Tasks may include:

1. Oversight of the guest experience: The artspace Associate will oversee the greeting and audience education process. generating an exemplary customer experience for each and every visitor by keeping the front area including the Front Desk and extended Merchandise area inviting, organized and clean, acting as hostess, docent and information source, and encouraging sales of art, merchandise. Additionally, the Associate will oversee the process for documenting audience participation in order for SRAC to capture email information to populate the email list and invite the guest to return for additional programming.

2. Ensure that all Artists who visit or exhibit at artspace enjoy a professional welcoming, appreciated experience while in artspace.

3. Oversee the booking/scheduling of educational bookings for all grade levels/ages. There are applicable fees and often an Artist must be booked to provide the hands-on experience for the tour. Contact the SRAC Events Manager to coordinate the Artist.

4. Ensure that potential bookings for Rentals, Catered Events, and Birthday Parties (ARTIE PARTIES) are communicated to the SRAC Events Manager, Exzavia Mitchell.

5. The artspace Associate assists the Executive Director by preparing correspondence, contracts, inventory (acceptance, care, and return) and taking notes for artspace Meetings.

6. The artspace Associate assists the Events Manager by preparing rooms/designated spaces for events and activities in advance. Specifically:

a. The front Window Space for meetings set up by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council Executive Director or any other staff members. Tables, Chairs, cleanliness of the Window area and reservations with Parish Taceaux.

b. The Studiospace for ARTIE PARTIES to include straightening and covering tables, decorating, preparing balloons, serving cupcakes/punch, and preparing art supplies for the parties.

c. The mainspace and coolspace areas for major events that require table/chair set up; covering tables, setting out decorations, etc.

7. The artspace Associate assists the Events Manager by working the Rental events as requested/scheduled. Events are catered by PT Catering Service – the in-house arm of the artspace catering. Some events are produced by SRAC, such as Opening Receptions, Meetings, and Gatherings. Some events are strictly rental of the space and may be managed by the artspace Associate.

8. Promotion: Under the direction of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council Marketing Director, Casey Jones, the artspace Associate will assist in promoting the Activities, Exhibitions, Birthday Parties and other designated Events by taking great photographs and short videos, and preparing social media messaging.

9. Review, Monitor, and Communicate about the artspace Calendar of Events and Rentals: Communicate changes to the calendar of events with the entire team: Education, Exhibition, Catering, Café, Custodial, and Marketing.

10. The artspace Associate position requires Stamina!

♦ Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. moving tables, lift boxes and carrying supplies to other locations.

♦ Ability to run errands. Valid driver’s license and own transportation required.

♦ Must be able to work at a computer, sit or stand for long periods of time.

♦ Long hours, including working some nights and weekends are required.

11. Cross Programming: All Shreveport Regional Arts Council staff members work on a variety of events produced by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council
