3 Area Artist Exhibitions Open in April

TWO EXHIBITIONS AND A TRIO OF ARTISTS BRING

BOLD, CREATIVE INTRIGUE TO ARTSPACE

Artspace has always been the space for connecting the public to the Arts in wonderful, new and exciting ways. Never will this be truer than on Thursday, April 14, with the opening of two exhibitions featuring a trio of unabashed artists using their talent to break through the boundaries of creativity.  “Brazen Spirit” showcases the art of sculptor Julie Glass and fiber artist Sherry Tamburo and “Breaching the Surface” introduces the acrylic on canvas work of Parker Turner.

Glass and Tamburo work with opposing materials--hard/soft, rough/smooth--to give the art observer an intoxicating spin on both of these artists' genius for creating with found objects and the earth's raw treasures. Each artist will exhibit many individual sculptures and wall pieces done in her separate style, as well as a collaborative creation, “Brazen Spirit,” that combines mixed media, Glass’ welding, and Tamburo’s fiber art to create a visually varied and intriguing experience. The exhibition illustrates that the artists and their art is greater than the sum of their parts.

Turner uses geometric shapes with bold lines and a playfully bright color palette to illustrate a theme that revolves around vices, temptations, love, and growth. His exhibition, “Breaching the Surface,” is designed to encourage the viewer to use the art to ask themselves, “What am I hiding from myself?”.

Glass’ focus in this exhibition is an all new style for this popular artist. Her fresh, unique approach uses wood—painting it, cutting it into various shapes and sizes, and screwing it back together to create unexpected and delightful sculptures. “My new series of wood collage is intuitive, colorful and fun. I want people to enjoy themselves and delight in seeing something they haven't seen from me before with this exhibition,” says Glass.

Tamburo weaves sustainable fibers into art that you want to wrap yourself in, hang on your wall, or put on a shelf for all to see.  Lush Is an apt description for both the texture and the colors that make up her art. “The transformation that happens with sustainable fiber speaks to a type of alchemy that continues to fuel my spirit as I am constantly challenging myself,” reflects Tamburo.

Turner’s art is a bit edgier, using X-ray-like depictions with acrylic on canvas to give the viewer a look under the surface of his subjects. The reoccurring symbols of hearts, snakes, bones, and flowers expose internal conflict within the mind. Turner plays with the balance of each subject and encourages the viewers to weigh their individual decisions and draw their own lines of morality. His current work is reminiscent of his former teenage street art style but bridged by the structured nature of his recent designs.

This trio of exhibitions will open at artspace at 708 Texas St. in downtown Shreveport at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 and can be viewed FREE by the public through May 28. Go to www.artspaceshreveport for more information.
