MARKED MUSE

by Hillary Frazier
MEDIUM Mixed media on watercolor paper

Presently, especially with social media, women can choose how they portray themselves. This, however, can come with scores of backlash, particularly if they are famous. This presents questions: is a woman confident because she is showing her body? Is she vain because she is aware of her beauty? Is she in control of her image, or is she catering to the Male Gaze?

The piece “Marked Muse” is meant to portray a modern woman as an iconographic deity, posing and presenting herself on her own terms. We are left to accept how much she chooses to reveal, leaving us to form our own conclusions about her intentions.
