DANCING WITH THE LEAVES

by Betsy Levels
MEDIUM Acrylic

Creating this piece from a childhood memory produced not only the painting, but a poem. The painting depicts a bittersweet memory from when I was about 4 years old, reveling in the freedom of a Fall afternoon at my much-loved childhood home. My best friends were the large dogs that roamed the property with me, sharing in all my adventures in the pine woods, fields, and massive oak trees on the hill. I recall every detail of the afternoon... the crisp fall breeze, the scent of the country air, the rustling of the leaves. And I can recall being completely happy at that moment, completely innocent at the time. I had no knowledge of the things that would cast shadows over my life once the growing up process set in. Although I have had all kinds of experiences since, this was the only memory I have of that complete, all-encompassing joy without any negatives. And looking back at it, both to paint about and to write about, is as painful as it is joyful because I miss it so much even now.
